How to Install a Rodent Barrier Under a Raised Structure
A step-by-step guide to installing BaseShield™ SubBase Defence beneath garden rooms, modular buildings, decking, and screw pile foundations.
Before you start
BaseShield™ SubBase Defence is designed for installation during the foundation stage of a new build — before the structure is placed on its foundations. This is the simplest, fastest, and most effective time to install it. You will need: BaseShield rolls (calculate coverage based on your footprint area), tin snips, a tape measure, and appropriate perimeter fixings for your base structure type.
Prepare the sub-base
Clear the ground beneath the structure of vegetation, debris, and loose material. The surface should be reasonably flat and free from sharp objects that could damage the mesh.
If the ground is soft or uneven, consider laying a geotextile membrane first — though this is optional and depends on site conditions.
Roll out BaseShield™
Starting from one edge of the footprint, unroll BaseShield™ SubBase Defence across the ground. The roll is 1m wide and 25m long, so most domestic structures can be covered with one or two rolls.
Lay the mesh flat against the ground. It does not need to be fixed to the ground surface — gravity and the structure above will hold it in place.
Overlap and cut to size
Where multiple rolls are needed, overlap sheets by a minimum of 100mm. This ensures there are no gaps large enough for rodent access.
Use standard tin snips to cut the mesh to shape around obstacles, screw piles, or irregular footprint edges. No specialist tools are required.
Secure the perimeter
Secure the edges of the mesh to the base frame, perimeter beam, or foundation structure using appropriate fixings such as screws, clips, or staples. The barrier should extend to or slightly beyond the outer edge of the skirting line.
Pay particular attention to areas around screw piles, service penetrations, and drainage points. Ensure all gaps are smaller than 7mm.
Complete the build
With the barrier in place, proceed with the rest of the build as normal. The mesh sits at ground level beneath the structure and requires no further attention or maintenance.
BaseShield is hot-dip galvanised after welding and is designed for permanent ground-contact installation. It will last the lifetime of the structure above.
